1. What is a daguerrotype? What did the surface of a daguerrotype resemble? When were they prominent? What photographic process did the daguerreotype replace?
It creates detailed images on copper paper without any use of a negative.  The process of a daguerreotype is something that needs to be done very carefully, but can create very different images than most. The resemblance of a daguerreotype is a silver plate and they came out in 1839 but became popular in the 1850's.  It was the first photographic process that actually worked well and became successful for people, and could also change from positive to negative.  Daguerreotype replaced pewter plates that the exposures took more than eight hours complete.

2. What is an "albumen" print? What was the main "ingredient" of the albumen process? When did the  albumen process die out?

Albumen print was the first photographic print that was used on a paper base from a negative, which actually included the use of albumen from egg whites.  The carte de visite started to become more popular to use in the albumen print, but the albumen print began to die after 1895, but not completely until about the 1920's.

3. What is a "stereograph?" When were they popular?
A stereograph is a 3D image that is created with two pictures put next to each other while being viewed by a stereoscope. It was popular for decades but invented around 1860, and died out around 1940.

4. What is a "carte de visite?" What were they used for?
A carte de visite is a smaller photographed made on thinner paper then put on to a thick paper card.  Most of the time it was made of an albumen print and was used for a calling card when visiting family.

5. Who were Matthew Brady and Alexander Gardner? They both are notable for what type of photography? When were they active? Post two noteworthy photographs for each photographer.
